Gimme' S'mores: Your Guide to Perfect S'Mores
These Tips Will Have EVERYONE Asking for More S’mores
Did you know that some of the first recipes for smores are more than 95 years old? They’ve almost been around as long as Hammond’s Candies! Many of the first s’more recipes are the same today: a combination of toasted marshmallow, melted chocolate, and a crunchy cracker. There’s a reason it hasn’t changed much: the combination is so delicious that it doesn’t need any updates!
S’mores are a great snack because of how flexible they are. Whether heating in a toaster oven, searing at a cookout, or roasting over a campfire, there’s no wrong way to make s’mores. This also means many ways to customize your s’mores to feature your favorite flavors.
As lifelong s’moresoholics, we at Hammond’s always love experimenting with this classic formula. Here are some of our go-to tips to take this treat from ‘campfire classic’ to ‘campfire classy’!
Listen to Your Inner Chocoholic
White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Caramel Chocolate, and more! No matter your favorite type of chocolate, you can be sure it’ll be right at home in a s’more. Try experimenting with different types and flavors of s’mores to find exciting new combinations. If you’re a fan of minty chocolates, then why not toast up your next set of s’mores with Mint Chocolate Chip or Peppermint Chocolate bars?
Caramel is another flavor combination that works wonders with toasted marshmallows; as a caramel-infused chocolate bar melts, it adds some deliciously gooey sweetness. Meanwhile, Toffee Chocolate is perfect for extra crunch with every bite.
While you’re at it, why not try a bar of S’mores Chocolate for an extra layer of campfire flavor?
When in doubt, you can always mix and match chocolates for that extra layer of S’moresy science. Combining sweet and salty flavors is a great place to start, but the only limit is your imagination.
Cookies & Cream with Red Velvet Cake chocolate? YUM.
Malted Milkshake and Soda Pop chocolate bars? Sounds good to us.
Banana Crunch plus Coconut Cream Pie? It’s like sending your s’more on a tropical vacation.
Toast Up the Magic of Marshmallows
Using your favorite flavors of chocolate isn’t the only way to take your s’mores in new and exciting directions. While puffy vanilla marshmallows are a classic for a reason, countless new combinations are waiting when you mix up your marshmallows.
If you like extra chocolatey S’mores, slice up some Chocolate Chip Marshmallows for extra fudgy goodness. The chocolate chips in these marshmallows usually melt at a different temperature than your chocolate bar, giving you bonus little bits of chocolate.
For white chocolate or fruity s’mores flavors, Strawberry Creme Marshmallows have a delightfully creamy taste. You can also chop up little bits of fresh fruit inside, like strawberries or blueberries! Meanwhile, Caramel Pumpkin or Maple Marshmallows will bring a cozy taste of Autumn to your s’mores. They are perfect for pairing with fresh apple cider or hot chocolate. The sugary spice of Cinnamon Churro Marshmallows has a similar effect.
Finally, why not celebrate Christmas in July by making your s’mores with Peppermint Marshmallows? Toast up a perfect square of holiday cheer by adding minty chocolate or crushed-up peppermint bits.
Like mixing and matching with chocolate bars, your imagination is the only limit. Our signature handmade marshmallow squares work perfectly for s’mores because of how evenly their fluffy geometry crisps up.
Of course, you can always put your chef’s hat on and check out the OOPS corner at Hammond’s Candies for some fresh marshmallow trim. These are the sugar shavings left behind when we hand-cut our signature marshmallows. Their wide surface area and sugary content mean they crisp up especially fast – perfect for anyone who enjoys a little kick of campfire char in their S’mores!
Rethink the Graham Cracker
It’s not a s’more without some cracker holding it all together. While graham crackers are a classic for a reason, you can always experiment with this part too! After all, why stop at 2/3rds when mixing and matching your favorite flavors?
Our favorite cracker alternative is a square of Peanut Brittle. You get an extra crunch with every bite, and the insides will melt slightly with your marshmallows, mixing in some sugary, buttery flavors.
Of course, you can use your favorite cookies, too, especially if you want to personalize your S’mores with a little Birthday Cake sweetness or Chocolate Chip crunch.
While it might sound a little unconventional, using salty butter crackers like Ritz to add salty undertones to your S’mores is a good idea. For dark chocolate or caramel combinations, the extra salinity really makes those flavors pop.
When in doubt, you can always deconstruct your S’mores by mixing heated chocolate and toasted marshmallows with a handful of your favorite popcorn! For saltier kettle corn like our Natural Sweet & Cheesy, this will give you an iconic s'mores popcorn ball that makes for a delicious on-the-go snack once it’s cooled. If you choose to use your favorite sugar-coated popcorn, like Caramel Chocolate or Sugary Churro, you can probably expect to spend a few minutes licking all the delicious remains off your fingers when you’re done. Sounds like a good time to us!
The best part about S’mores is that there’s no wrong way to make them. This quick and easy treat is a canvas for your favorite candy flavors – and a perfect opportunity to experiment with new ones.
